| I started some years back tracing my family tree. I found that there were
so few people with my surname in England that it was just as easy to collect all
occurrences of the name and then try to link them together. |
| I began to run out of easily accessible information sources in the UK and
started to look further afield in the hope of finding some link with Oxmans in other
countries. |
| As a result, I have now started a single name study of the Oxman name and
compile records of any Oxmans I can find, whether they are related to me or not. |
| The Oxman name appears to originate independantly in England, Finland,
Russia and Germany. |
| It now appears in England, USA, Canada, Australia, Finland, Uruguay,
Ecuador, Argentina, Chile, Israel, Russia and elsewhere. |
Variations of the name are:-
Ochsman
and Oksman in Russia,
Oksman
in Finland and
Ochsman,
Oxmann and Oex(e)man(n) in Germany. |
A
large proportion of the Oxmans in the USA are of Russian (Ukrainian) origin often from the
Kiev area. |
| In England I have found one group of Oxmans who were actually called Oxnam
in the 1900s and the name got changed somehow. Oxnam is also fairly infrequent and
originates in Cornwall, England and is sometimes said to be a corruption of Oxenham. |
