Origin of the name in England

The Oxman name seems to occur at an early date in several places in England.

The first Oxman I have found is Johannes Oxeman in Kent in 1201.

There are Oxmans living near London as early as 1552.

There are Oxmans in Lincolnshire by 1563 and also more mentioned in Kent.

In 1625 there are Oxmans in Bodmin, Cornwall.

In 1630 the name appears in Ashburton Devon.

By 1649 there is at least one Oxman in Suffolk.

Other similar names - Oxnam & Oxenham

The name is confused at times with the Oxnam name, which originates in the Cornwall / Devon area, and so I have had to keep records of some Oxnam as well. I have found several instances of Oxnams being referred to as Oxman. At least one current Oxman family were called Oxnam as recently as the early 1900s.

Oxnam is sometimes said to be a corruption of Oxenham.

For more details on the Oxnam and Oxenham name see :

Searching for the Oxman name

I have searched all the common records in the UK for occurances of the Oxman name including the Birth, marriage and death indexes and the census records as well as the Mormon IGI records of Parish registers.

Birth, Marriage and Death Indexes

I have gone through all the birth, death and marriage records from 1837 to 1994 at St Catherine's House in London, and in them I have found records of 120 births, 92 marriages and 89 deaths. That's 157 years worth of books, normally there are 4 books to a year for each type of record making about 1,884 books of records checked!

Census Records

From the Census records I have only found 9 people in the 1851 census, 4 in the 1871 census (you need addresses to find them which accounts for the low numbers) and 17 in the 1881 census for which there is an index (although not yet for Middlesex / London where I know several lived).

Mormon Records

The Latter Day Saints lists of births and marriages from parish registers in the UK show records of 98 christenings and 39 marriages in England since 1552.

Earliest Oxmans

I have also found references to documents back in the 1200s that mention 2 more Oxmans.

Johannes Oxeman is mentioned in the Curia Regis Rolls in 1201.

Richard le Oxeman is mentioned in the Cheshire Assize Rolls in 1289. As yet I have not got copies of this documents to find out any details about him.

Contemporary Oxmans

As far as current family members go, the BT telephone directories only show 19 addresses in England. I know a number of people must be ex-directory as I believe that there are about 48 people with the name alive in the UK at the moment.

Heraldry

There is an Oxman coat of arms :

"Argent, a lion gules, rampant regardant".

i.e. a red lion standing on his hind legs, looking over his shoulder, on a white background.

I have not yet established who this coat of arms belonged to or whether anyone is still entitled to it.

Oxman Place Names

There is an Oxman Lane in Milton Keynes. However it appears to be named after the occupation rather than an individual. The street name was adopted on 26th April 1983. and there are others nearby with rural occupation names

As a result of my researches, I can track the Oxmans in my family over 8 generations to the late 1700s.
If you are an Oxman, contact me by e-mail and let me know who you are and some of your ancestry. I may be able to trace your ancestry further back from some of the information I have already gathered.
