An uncommon name?                                

Oxman is the 55,096th most common last name in the USA.

When I was in Florida I noticed that the Oxman name appeared to be more common in the telephone directories than in England. Now, whenever I am in the USA, I collect any occurrences in the telephone directories and any other sources.

Early Oxmans

A Lazarus Oxman is married on 11 July 1711 is married to a Garthwright (Gartright) Berry in Boston Massachusetts by a Rev. Mr. Benj. Colman (Presbyterian).

A Lazarus Oxman is born on 29 Aug 1717 to Lazarus Oxman and Gartright in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts.

Another early occurrences of the name in America is Captain Lazarus Oxman, Master of the Albany a passenger ship from Rotterdam, out of Portsmouth on 4th Sept, 1728.

Oxnam is a variation that originates in Cornwall or Devon in England.

There is a variation Oxmann which generally originates from Germany.

There is also another variation of the name Oexeman or Oexemann which originates in Wesphalia in Germany.
